Brisbane-based telecommunications vendor Over the Wire has acquired a
Tier III data centre in the city’s Fortitude Valley area to complement
its existing Brisbane facility.

The acquisition expands Over the Wire’s Brisbane colocation
capacity by 120 racks. Melbourne IT’s Web and application hosting
division WebCentral has signed a contract to be an anchor tenant in the
new facility.

Over the Wire director Michael Omeros said that the data centre is
undergoing a refurbishment process to install new racks, power systems
and additional cooling.

In addition, the data centre will house the telco’s secondary network
point of presence (PoP) once the refurbishment is complete.

“It is anticipated that the facility will be connected via diverse
fibre to the company’s Brisbane metropolitan core network before the end
of January 2013,” he said in a statement.

Over the Wire director David Tisdall added that the data centre refurbishment should be completed by February 2013.

“The facility is 466 square metres and previously had a power usage
effectiveness (PUE) of 2.5. We’re looking at a substantial improvement
on that power efficiency rating once we’ve got all the new equipment
installed in the coming weeks,” he said.

Brisbane telecommunications provider, Over the Wire, is leading the way in environmentally friendly colocation,
with the launch of its Data Centre 2. The leading edge equipment,
provided by global infrastructure supplier APC, is one of the largest
installations of APCʼs Hot-Aisle Containment System (HACS) in Australia,
in terms of useable rack space.

The HACS channels the hot air produced by the equipment in the rack,
into a fully enclosed aisle. This containment allows intelligent,
optimised control of the temperatures within the racks and more
efficient cooling of hot air than traditional hot aisle/cold aisle
facilities. As opposed to traditional environmental control systems,
which inefficiently reduce the temperature of the entire room, hot‐aisle
containment eliminates the over-provisioning of cooling and is
therefore much more environmentally friendly.

Over the Wire CEO, Brent Paddon, says embracing the new technology
was an environmental and economical decision, based on customer demand
and efficiency. “We strongly believe hot aisle containment was the best
choice for our requirements. The system is not only environmentally
friendly, the cooling technology allows for higher density of equipment.
We expect to see an improvement of 15 to 20% in terms of cooling
efficiency when compared to our first data centre. Our Data Centre 2
clients have 15A/rack A + B as standard, and as the demand for space,
particularly in Queensland, is very high, we are pleased to be able to
offer such an economical and environmentally friendly product,” said Mr
Paddon.

Gordon Makryllos, Vice President, Pacific, APC by Schneider Electric,
said “Increasingly we are seeing businesses in Queensland outsourcing
their data centres, so we were pleased when Over the Wire approached us
to help it develop its Data Centre 2. Hot Aisle Containment Systems are
the ideal solution for high-density server configurations or data
centres where space is at a premium and high rack densities are
required. It ensures that businesses receive the best energy efficiency
possible without compromising on performance.”

Over the Wire have pre-sold almost 50% of the available co-location space and envisage strong demand for the remaining racks.

Data Centre 2 is located in Over the Wire’s facility in Spring Hill, Brisbane.
